apparently synthetic instruments stroke my imagination way more than acoustic ones. (myti)
-
it's probably because synthetic instruments have less rules since they're totally original more often than they're catering to archetypes.
-
there's no archetypes to cater to. there's like, bass, lead, pad, bell... that's pretty much it, and those are more like categories
-
they do not rely on Connotations.
-
but violins are full of Connotations that make it difficult to know where they should and shouldn't be used, and my void of genre knowledge and
musical analysis makes me totally blind. i can barely even think of any songs that use them except like stuffy classical music, even though i'm dead
certain they are used in plenty of music i listen to, just not in a way that makes you say ah this is a Violin Song
-
piano, electric guitar, trumpets, pretty much any instrument i have a strong mood association with is like this
-
but when one of those instruments is playing by itself because i'm just dicking around looking for an instrument i like and want to use, all i can
hear is the connotations of a Violin Song
-
i start by looking for an instrument i think sounds Interesting right now, and non-synthetic instruments can't sound Interesting because you've
already heard them a thousand times and the novelty wears off quickly for the ones you haven't
